Oh come on now Shooter- surely I'd have figured you of all people, are at least betting on the post-All Star break collapse of the Mets. ;D Wait a minute now, I'm running my own little clandestine over/under club. ;D That you never received an invitation is...oh, well, so EXPECTED. Whatever. Johnny realized that, too gain more speed on the basepaths, he had to be more...aerodynamic. ;D Free agency (and the money that comes with it) in broad relief.

Roughneck, I never thought I'd say this, but perhaps the boot is in order here. Torre has clearly lost his touch. A-Rod is a miserable failure, no doubt, but Torre didn't manage his team as smartly and efficiently as he has done in the past. I believe he used four different line-ups in the Tigers series - desperate moves by someone who never before betrayed any sense of desperation. Torre mentally checked out this year, but well before that, his luck deserted him - a double whammy. Methinks the Yankees would benefit from a change of scenery, manager-wise, although the reports of Lou Piniella's ascendancy are not necessarily welcome news from my vantage point. Sweet Lou was always one of my love-hate guys while in pinstripes (both as a player and a manager), and his track record since his Yankee days does not entirely recommend him. Joe Girardi might be good choice, if he can avoid his "Joe Torre's my mentor" managerial style. The dark horse of course is Don Mattingly, who was my Mickey Mantle while growing up.

Wow Shooter...I love the standings so far Think Torre will still have a job in October? First and foremost, Roughneck, I hope you are well. You'll have to give me an update on your education. Second, interesting that you should (out of the proverbial blue) post on the day my beloved Yankees enjoyed .500 respectability for the first time in a long time. Alas, by the time I chose to respond, they'd fallen back below .500 following a putrid rubber game in the Texas Rangers series. Argh! The good news is (at least from an emotional - and, in a way, financial - standpoint), I joined a fantasy baseball league this year (for the first time ever), so I'm necessarily paying more attention to guys who play for a wide assortment of teams, including (EGAD!!!) the M-E-T-S (why I pursued the currently clueless David Wright so desperately during my league's auction, I'll never know). Somehow, I managed to land A-Rod as well (of course, I paid a pretty penny for him at auction), so, for the first 4 or so weeks of the season, I was in first place (homers to the left of me, homers to the right of me). The last 2 weeks? Not so much. Anyhow, as to your quip about Torre, I'm afraid that I cannot defend the man's record of late, other than to say that, this year in particular, he's had to deal with major player injuries...and a front office squad that is nothing if not passive-aggressive. I still think he's lost his touch overall, but I'm willing to give him some rope based upon the prevelant "outside" influences that are conspiring to make him look bad. Time (and further press conferences conducted by the ubiquitous yet vapid spokesperson Howard Rubenstein) will tell whether Torre has a long leash attached to him, or a short lease that is subject to swifty detachment. Third, there has been SO much activity around here, I've been unable to keep up. ;D

Wow, folks are still around, lol. Well, not sure if I'd told you, but Fordham didn't work out. Between working full time, full time classes, and the commute...couldn't do all that, burned out. After looking around for a while for a real job decided to go back and get my teaching certification. I can still use that as a stepping stone to a professorship, and it'll be a real job to put on my resume. The Yankees, from what I understand it's supposed to be Cashman in the hotseat, since he wanted total control over the team. He wanted a blank check, got it, and it hasn't done him any good. Also they note that the players aren't performing, and the best manager in the world can't play good baseball with a Pee Wee team. They interestingly pointed out that the Yanks have been in an especially steep nosedive since Clemens said he was coming back, as if they decided they can all go to sleep and he'll do it all himself. Even if that were true, he pitches once ever five days, lol. I think the only ones who don't realize they Yankees' season is over are the Yankees. And yeah, this place has been dead. Doesn't even look like Sis checks in anymore.
