Ah yes, for Met fans, time began in 1962. ;D No Mr. Shooter, time didn't begin there, only being a Mets fan did. Before the Mets, we had the NY Giants and the Brooklyn Dodgers. Contrary to what most present day Yankee fans like to believe, except for 4 brief years a long time ago, the Yankees never were the only game in town. ;D

You old-timer, you. ;D Seriously, this is one Yankee fan who well knows that New York was once a three-team town. I remember well the stories my grandfather and father would tell about going to see the Yankees do battle at the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field. The Yankees wouldn't have such a rich history if it weren't for the local competition, the Mets included (the Subway Series has provided more than a few legendary moments). Indeed, if the Yankees HAD been the only game in town, there wouldn't be so much for a Yankee fan to gloat about. ;D ;D

You mean YOU rooted for the Dodgers and the Giants way back when, snizz? You old-timer, you. ;D How about let's wait a couple more years till the AARP card gets here? Yes and no Mr. Shooter. I was all of two when they played their last seasons in NY. But I come from a long line of diehard Brooklyn Dodgers fans on my old man's side and NY Giants fans on my mom's, which made for some lively family gatherings for years. ;D My dad and grandads thought two was 'bout right and started hauling me off to games. I have no recollection of seeing either team play, but I can honestly say I did see them and was at Ebbets and the Polo Grounds. Agreed Mr. Shooter. My problems have never been with the Yankees themselves. For a lot of years I did root for both teams, although after the AL instituted the DH I've preferred the NL. My problem is with Steinbrenner. The team rivalries were always there and intense, but there was a time when you could root for more than one team, they weren't all in the same league. Steinbrenner brought with him an atmosphere that makes that impossible today.

I have no recollection of seeing either team play, but I can honestly say I did see them and was at Ebbets and the Polo Grounds. Hey snizz, hit it here, win a suit. ;D You might appreciate this. Way back in college, I took an archaeology class. For our final paper, we had to "excavate" a historical place, setting forth the proper archaeological methodology and speculating as to what we would find buried in that particular location. The locations chosen by students ranged from something as obvious as Rome to a rather pedestrian locale: the local landfill. I decided, however, to merge my love for archaeology and history with my passion for baseball. Thus, I "excavated" Ebbets Field, or more precisely the parking lot and apartment building(s) currently located on the old Ebbets Field site. Anyhow, I don't recall the grade I received (it wasn't my strongest class, overall), but I do recall the professor being obstinately indifferent to sports in general and baseball in particular. He thus failed to appreciate the joy I found in "unearthing" an old Jackie Robinson homer from beneath some debris and weeds, or a faded old program featuring Carl Erskine's mug. Your broadside against Steinbrenner is understandable. As a Yankee fan, I have spent years singing his praises and, yes, years cursing his very existence. While Steinbrenner's "techniques" leave a lot to be desired and his people skills are non-existent, we Yankee fans nevertheless do appreciate his willingness to do anything and everything to field a winning team. A selfish position? Perhaps. But then again, I'm not in the business of rooting for my team to lose so that others might have a chance. Being a fan of a team, any team, is, in a sense, a Machiavellian experience. ;D

If only, eh Mr. Shooter? All those old ;D old timers picked those bones so clean a dog wouldn't bother sniffing at them. I'd venture to say whatever the Hall of Fame didn't cart away, if they all coughed up their little pieces and glued them all together, it wouldn't surprise me if they'd come close to being able to reconstruct both stadiums. Course nobody roots for their team to lose but I guess I'm enough of an old timer ;D that you can't teach this old dog new tricks. I'm with what Red said earlier on about winning not being everything. A long time ago ;D there used to be a saying, it's not whether you win or lose it's how you play the game. That's what I was raised on and what I still believe.

'Course, if I did find anything out there in Brooklyn, I'd probably make a killing on ebay. ;D Agreed...it IS how you play the game that counts. And on that score, I'm proud of my team.

Win or lose, as long as my team shows up to play the game I'm proud of mine too.

Sounds like a sounder investment than the market, at this point. ;D Last night, my team showed up to play. Only problem is, the Red Sox ALSO showed up. That one hurt!

Yeah, they got their ass kicked in more ways than one. Cute. Real cute. For the record, Varitek keeping his catcher's mask on while clobbering A-Rod in the kisser is about is about as classy as a vice president who likes to throw "f-bombs" at his colleagues. Incidentally, Roughneck, how many more games are John Franco and Mike Stanton going to blow before your skipper FINALLY realizes that what's broke ought to be fixed. ;D

Not for sale at any price, eh snizz? Sounds like a sounder investment than the market, at this point. ;D No way. Money takes a back seat to priceless good luck charms. The ball is a foul that went deep over the third base line and my father-in-law came up with it. It was in the first weeks of the season before anyone knew what the Say Hey Kid would go on to. That game was also the first date he had with my mother-in-law. When it became crystal clear Willie was headed for Rookie of the Year and looked destined for greatness, he decided he had to get him to sign that foul. He started hanging around the players entrance without any luck. After a game he attended with his lovely date, she kindly agreed to keep him company in his ritual Willie wait. Lo and behold on that day the man finally hit paydirt and the precious ball was signed. He declared this woman a good luck charm and vowed he'd marry her and the following year he did. On the eve of my marriage to his equally lovely daughter, he presented me with the ball and the wish that it was the start of as much love and happiness as it was for them. When my own son gets to that place, I plan on passing what's become known in the family as "the lucky charm ball" on to him. I have to ask Mr. Shooter, is slinging barbs at the Mets pitchers really the wisest choice for a Yankee fan?

Snizz, it's stories like that that point up exactly why baseball is America's true pastime. Thanks for sharing. And agreed, that's one ball that should NEVER become ebay fodder. Slinging bards at Franco and Stanton is therapeutic. I'm choosing to ignore the fact that my own team's pitching staff now looks like a gigantic piece of swiss cheese. ;D

That was truly a touching story snizz... ... ... ;D ( Please refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages while typing in the future... ;D ) Franco Shooter?? Sorry that one's a bouncer...He's been reviled by Mets fans since his first go 'round- there was only applause to see him go and groans when they took him back. I'm with Willie Randolph...totally different era now and none of 'em know how to play the game anymore - so with that...time for FOOTBALL!! ;D
