Note From Eddie Stubbs:
2003 continues to be one of the worst calendar years for deaths in the bluegrass and country music communities. I'm very sorry to report of the death of Grand Ole Opry star and Country Music Hall Of Fame member Don Gibson. He died at 6:55 PM tonight (Monday) at Baptist Hospital. He was 75. He played and recorded some bluegrass early on his career as you know. Obviously, it is too early to know anything about arrangements.

Another great gone! One of the greatest songwriters ever, without a doubt. This man wrote "I can't stop loving you" and "Oh lonesome me" in the same night! I love "a legend in my time". Don Gibson is one of the greatest artists that has ever appeared in country music, but was probably too diverse (and had serious problems with depression and drugs) to gain the recognition he deserved. There hasn't been a singer/songwriter to come along in the last decade that could come close to his talent. RIP Don, I will always listen to your music.

I was thinking about his body of music over the last couple hours. The 1950's country scene keeps showing it's age. Favoretes in clude Ray Charles I Can't Stop Loving You and Just one Time Connie Smith.

I was trying to think of how many people have recorded "I Can't Stop Loving You" -- I think I have four or five different versions in my collection, and that's just barely the tip of the iceberg. Elvis could wail on that one. And "Sea of Heartbreak," that was such a good song! RIP, Don! The country legends are passing away from us.

Elvis could wail on that one. And "Sea of Heartbreak," that was such a good song! RIP, Don! The country legends are passing away from us. It's been a terrible year I Can't Stop Loving You has been recorded by over 3000 different artists! Amazing! Not bad for a #7 song huh? In 1957, Gibson was still living in a trailer park near Knoxville, TN where he had been working at local radio station WNOX. Gibson wrote "Oh Lonesome Me" and "I Can't Stop Loving You" in one afternoon after his television and vacuum cleaner had been repossessed. Acuff-Rose was preparing to pitch "Oh Lonesome Me" to George Jones, so Gibson and Atkins rushed into the studio to record it before that could happen. "I Can't Stop Loving You" was the throwaway side of this record. It debuted on the pop charts only one week after "Oh Lonesome Me" made it's way onto the country charts. Both songs were charting at the same time on both the pop and country charts with "Oh Lonesome Me" reaching the coveted number one spot and "I Can't Stop Loving You" reached number seven on the country chart.

Been a bad year this. Another one of my favourites gone - Oh, Lonesome Me, Sea of Heartbreak, Lonesome No.1, Blue Blue Day. Mandy Barnett recorded Give Myself A Party. And Ray Charles is my favourite `I Can't Stop Loving You'. 2003 has sure taken away a lot of memory donors.
