It's such a mix that I figured this would be the best place to put it, but you were right Sis, this is a good station! ;D Didn't know the frequency for my first trip in, last week, but went in yesterday knowing it, so listened to it, and loved it! Has a good strong signal too, got it all the way to mile marker 25 along 80 on the way back, as opposed to losing ESU's station about 20 minutes from campus . Is also RUN like a real station too, unlike ESU. And, I can catch it online! ;D

Glad to hear you discovered WFUV, Roughneck. It is a necessity here in the NYC market - a station that informs, educates and plays the music you thought you'd never hear on the radio. My favorite show is Ceol na NGael ("the music of the Irish") on Sunday afternoons. 'Course, it doesn't hurt that FUV, as one of the best run university radio stations in the country, casts a nice light on my alma mater, Fordham.

You hit it right- they just recently upped the juice so now they can transmit further- and I can pick 'em up just about everywhere now. And yep it is a real station...they've got 'real' (as in professional) jocks (as opposed to students)...they even had the good fortune to hire on a couple of the old WNEW heritage jocks...Vin Scelsa & Pete Fortunale. And double yep- a totally amazing mix... I'm with Shooter ( ) and like Ceol na NGael (love the newscast from Dublin!!) though I have to listen to the archives on that one since it's on when I'm at work...my other favorite shows are Under The Covers, City Folk, Idiots Delight and Mixed Bag...

You agree with me, LS? I guess FUV makes for strange bedfellows. ;D Seriously, FUV's online archive is amazing. Rare is it today that a radio station's website actually provides more than just another forum for advertisment.

Hey, LS, I read in today's Times that Fordham and the New York Botanical Garden have FINALLY resolved their dispute over the FUV radio tower that currently sits, half-completed, on the Bronx campus. Apparently, Montefiore Medical Center has agreed to lease its rooftop to Fordham for purposes of constructing a new radio tower. The Botanical Garden and Fordham will split the cost of construction. Inasmuch as Montefiore Medical Center sits on high ground in the north Bronx, the new rootop tower would broaden FUV's reach into most of Connecticut and a good part of northern and central New Jersey. Construction is slated to begin as soon as the FCC and the relevant state and city agencies approve the whole deal.

Honestly, I understand that the Times has to triple check their sources these days but yeesh- sounds like they oughta change the name to Behind The Times. Yep- I heard...the other papers reported it a week ago. Of course that's great news- but then on the other hand if it takes them as long to get FCC approval and contruct it as it did in reaching an agreement- I may never get to enjoy it in my lifetime.

I figured that the News and Post probably ran the story first. For them, local news is THE news, not just an afterthought. Heck, I'm surprised the people at the Times even know where the Bronx is! Anyhow, you're right about the FCC approval process: it might just take as long as the Fordham v. Botanical Garden standoff, if not longer. Certain hospital employees are already calling for studies to determine whether radiowaves will adversely affect hospital patients. LS, you know the old equation: studies = be prepared to wait.

Well, guys, give 'em a break. Many of us around the country actually read The Times, and while I do glance through the "Local" section, generally I'm reading it for other things (like some of the world's greatest Op-Ed columnists, f'example).

Many of us around the country actually read The Times, and while I do glance through the "Local" section, generally I'm reading it for other things (like some of the world's greatest Op-Ed columnists, f'example). SAM, since it's called the NEW YORK Times, it stands to reason that the paper's local section would actually have a feel for what's going on locally (or would at least fake it). Unfortunately, the Times all too often is behind the times (pun very much intended) on local news stories, or simply ignores them entirely. That's why most people around here buy the Times AND one of the colorful local rags, such as the Post or the Daily News. After all, William Safire can tell you a lot of things about the English language, but he sure as heck won't tell you that the City's rat population is creeping upward once again, or that the Second Avenue subway line might not be a dead deal after all.

Sorry SAM...but no can do- I'm with Shooter on this one. Never cared for The Times at all- too full of themselves. And they might as well be out of Seattle or Oshkosh for that matter...nothing 'NY' about it. The Post...well Murdoch can't be bothered with sending out reporters to cover news- so he just has 'em make it up ;D ...I get the Daily News for the local news and entertainment section (and they're the one's who broke the story on the EPA cover-up and the soldiers coming back from Iraq sick from depleted uranium exposure who were being ignored by the military)...Newsday for national & world news and they've got great editorialists (and they're the ones that broke the story on the CIA agent being outted)...and I prefer that other bastion of liberal media spin ;D ;D The Washington Post.

Can we agree to disagree just once, LS? I mean, enough with the lovefest. ;D Umm, LS, you forgot to mention The Village Voice. No newspaper reading experience would be complete without a daily dose of those Voice classifieds. ;D

Okay, I can see y'all's point. And lately I've been less enchanted by 'em, because they've started charging if I want to read the archives (particularly the editorial cartoons). <sigh> Can't get nothin' for free.
But for those of us who don't LIVE in the NY region, it's about all the news we get. If you think American news is egocentric, that's nothing compared to Southwestern news (there's an east coast?). ;D
