None of the things in the article surprised me at all. How else could you possibly explain how an unqualified, incompetent, idiot, who cannot even pronounce words larger than 5 letters long (and at that, they most likely have to phonetically write them out on cue cards for him), even got as far as being the Republican nominee?? The only possible conclusion any rational thinking person can come to is, that it was quite obviously bought, he was going to be nothing but a figurehead from the start, while the people from daddy's former administration actually ran the pony show. Who else would make someone that ran against a dead man- and LOST the race- a Cabinet head?
When he speaks on his own- nothing but stupidity spews forth. Such as his comments pre-9/11, when what has become a serious problem in certain areas of the country with the amount of illegal aliens entering this country, and people were calling for him to restore the INS to what it once was, and give them more funding and manpower to get the situation under control, his remark was- since they're already here, just give them all green cards! (Less than 6 months later-9/11). Then there were his public remarks about how all this "foreign policy stuff" was just too confusing for him. Or how prior to 9/11, it was noted that since he was elected- 80% of his time (the most of any president ever) was spent on his ranch in Texas away from the White House, and he therefore did not attend key meetings and briefings in Washington.
And yeah, when first, the so called "Patriot Act" was passed, and then words like "supremacy," "pre-emptive," and "unilateral" started getting tossed around- memories of sitting in history class learning about one Sen. Joseph McCarthy, and the rise and fall of Hitler, all came flooding back. The correlation is very frightening.
Unfortunately, no one's seemed to have learned any lessons from the past. How about Tonkin, maybe? A resolution that was passed on complete fabrication, and wasn't recinded until a decade and 50,000 dead (plus countless wounded and permanently disabled) servicemen and women later. All for what?
I see Iraq as being that Tonkin. There is no immediate threat from Hussein or Iraq to this country, and this administration's attempts at rationalizing it are full of bull. We have many far more immediate threats that need to be handled right NOW- and Hussein at this point, isn't high up on that list. The same things were said about Stalin, Khruschiev (sp?) and Castro. The first two are long dead, and we're still here. And like Castro is a threat to anyone? So let the UN resume their inspections of Iraq, and if they feel there's just cause, then any forceful compliance should be done by UN forces- not US forces- we have more pressing matters to deal with at this time- namely we want those that murdered 3000+ people captured and brought to justice. That was the goal and should remain our sole focus- anything less would mean all those people's lives meant nothing to this gov't.
Iraq is nothing more than a personal vendetta- and in my eyes, a blatant misuse of power.
As far as Congress? We were attacked. But in as much as we were attacked- more importantly was the manner in which we were attacked- from within our own borders, by known terrorists that were roaming freely about for years. So it basically comes down to a major breach in national security- and a major embarrassment to our gov't. So now they're rushing around out of their own panic and fears- by overcompensating, instead of thinking things out clearly and logically- and looking at the long term rammifications of what they're doing now. Things did not get to this point overnight, it's been cumulative, over several decades and administrations. It took many years to deteriorate, and can't be "fixed" in short order, by slapping "band-aids" on things that are not going to hold up down the line. We need long term goals and solutions- not stupifying knee jerk reactions.
If Hussein slips while shaving, believe me, I wouldn't shed a tear either- but neither would I shed a tear if DuHbya met up with another hostile pretzel- and the next time the pretzel wins. Nor if anyone accidentally turned on the microwave while Cheney was still in the room. This group are all peas from the same pod as far as I'm concerned. This administration has taken our Constitution and twisted it, just as the Taliban and the al-Qaeda have twisted the Koran- to serve their purposes. I say just take Iraq up on it's offer of a duel, save the lives of innocent people- and may the lesser of the evils win.
Ooops- but there I go being "un-American" again.
