Mayor Of Margaritaville Hasn't Wasted Away
By WALT BELCHER wbelcher@tampatrib.com Published: Feb 27, 2005
TAMPA - There were Parrot Heads to the left. Parrot Heads to the right. You could have seen them circling all afternoon - eight hours before Jimmy Buffett took the stage at the Ford Amphitheatre on Saturday. They came 20,000 strong, in grass skirts, wearing parrot- head and shark-fin hats.
Tailgaters filled the parking lot at the Florida State Fair. Blenders rendered that frozen concoction that helped them hang on until the bald, barefoot troubadour sang their anthem, ``Margaritaville.''
There was a nip in the air but it didn't rain.
``We had the parrot-head karma working for us,'' said Harry Fink, president of the Tampa Bay Parrot Heads in Paradise Club. ``It was a perfect day, and we had at least 5,000 come by our club's party.''
People journeyed from throughout the state and from out of state. Charlie and Judy Curtis drove all the way from Apulia Station, N.Y., to see their first Buffett concert.
``We worked two days on our hats,'' Charlie said, pointing to the parrot-shaped headgear on his noggin.
Buffett greeted the faithful by saying, ``This place sure beats the Ice Palace.'' It brought a cheer.
He said his band might make some noise but not to worry: ``We sent out some tequila to the noise complainers, so they should be rocking by now.''
He opened a nearly three- hour set with ``Piece of Work'' off his latest best-selling album ``License To Chill'' and sang the title cut.
All the old favorites were included: ``Volcano,'' ``Changes in Latitudes,'' ``Cheeseburger in Paradise, ``Coconut Telegraph,'' ``Come Monday,'' ``Son of a Son of a Sailor,'' ``Fins'' and ``Margaritaville.''
Much of it was a group sing- along.
At the halfway point, Buffett paid tribute to the late Johnny Carson, showing clips from the nine times he appeared on the ``Tonight Show'' beginning in 1981.
He played Carson's favorite Buffett song, which could never be performed on the ``Tonight'' show - ``Why Don't We Get Drunk'' (the unprintable part comes next).
Before it was over, Buffett told the crowd he hoped the amphitheater would stay open so he could play there again.
