Jam Vet Haynes Joins The Dead
In the ever-evolving cast of the Dead, Joan Osborne (vocals) and Rob Barraco (keyboard/vocals) are out and jam band guitarist/singer extraordinaire Warren Haynes is in. The veteran player plans to remain active in both Gov't Mule and the Allman Brothers Band in addition to performing with the dead.
In the midst of a Gov't Mule tour, the new Dead lineup will debut Feb. 9 at the band's second annual Winter Jam at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco. The band is completed by Phil Lesh (bass), Mickey Hart (drums), Billy Kreutzmann (drums), Bob Weir (guitar), Jimmy Herring (guitar) and Jeff Chimenti (keyboards).
The Dead's mail order ticketing (GDTS Too) offered a limited amount of tickets for the show, with orders closing yesterday (Jan. 20). Tickets go on sale Sunday to the general public through Ticketmaster.
The band's official Web site says a summer tour will take shape in two legs, with the first launching in mid-June and lasting through July 4. The second leg will kick off late in July and run through August.
Gov't Mule will kick off a tour Jan. 27 in Indianapolis, which will feature a mix of headlining shows and, as previously reported, dates opening for Kid Rock. In March, Haynes will be in New York for the Allman Brothers' annual stand at the Beacon Theatre.
The Dead's February 2003 show at the Warfield marked its official name change from the Other Ones. After several years estranged, the surviving principal members of the Grateful Dead -- Lesh, Hart, Kreutzmann and Weir -- reunited under that banner in summer 2002 with Herring, Chimenti and Barraco rounding out the lineup.
Contemporary blues artist Susan Tedeschi joined for several dates on the Other Ones' 2002 fall reunion tour. Osborne signed on for the Dead's 2003 Summer Getaway run, the second leg of which was a co-headlining bill with Bob Dylan.

Haynes, Dead Confirm Summer Tour Dates
As expected, the Dead are hitting the road again this summer. The stalwart group will kick off its plans June 12 with a previously announced appearance at the third Bonnaroo festival in Manchester, Tenn. The first leg gets into gear with a five-night stand at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colo., and will close with a July 3 pairing of the Dead and the Allman Brothers Band in George, Wash.
The second leg of the tour will crank up July 23 in Maryland Heights, Mo., and close Aug. 19 in Atlanta. The later set of dates also includes two-night stands in Mansfield, Mass. (July 30-31), Camden, N.J. (Aug. 7-8), Holmdel, N.J. (Aug. 10-11) and Wantagh, N.Y. (Aug. 13-14).
Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule) and Robert Hunter will alternate throughout the tour, opening the shows with solo acoustic sets, except for the Aug. 3 show in Hartford, Conn., where Haynes will perform between the Dead's two sets.
As previously reported, the latest incarnation of the band includes the core of Grateful Dead alums Phil Lesh (bass), Mickey Hart (drums), Billy Kreutzmann (drums) and Bob Weir (guitar), plus Jimmy Herring (guitar), Jeff Chimenti (keyboards) and Haynes (guitar/vocals). The new lineup played its first public show in February in San Francisco.
Weir says of Haynes, "He's a strong singer and a good instrumentalist."
In a recent interview, Weir told Billboard.com, "I've worked with Warren a number of times, but in the past I've always worked counter to, against what he was doing instrumentally. That's not gonna work in the current context of the Dead. What we're gonna need to do is work as one, otherwise it's just gonna be too crowded. There's just not going to be room for all that instrumentation in the music."
"That said, I think we made significant progress in doing that [at the San Francisco show]," he said. "We were pairing what we were doing, trying to work as basically one unit, a section -- the rhythm guitar section. "
"Of course, Warren's gonna take leads and stuff like that, and I probably will as well and there's always Jimmy," he added. "But, when he's not taking a lead, he and I, our instruments have to be one voice. As a matter of fact, it's an opportunity to do something fairly amazing that I have not heard yet. I'm sure that it's been done from time to time, but at high volumes in highly improvisational music, to be able to drift and be of one voice is going to be a thrill, once we get it going on a sustained basis. I'm looking forward to this."
Weir, who last month released the two-disc studio/live retrospective "Weir Here" (Hybrid), also said the reincarnated Dead will probably release new music at some point in the future. The difference from past Dead albums, he believes, will likely be a non-traditional approach to the recording process.
"The technology is such that we can take whatever we're doing in the studio --and we'll be in the studio to rehearse -- and we can record that," he explained. "We can take that on the road with us, work with that on the road and bring it back. What used to be studio recordings will be different now.
"We'll be able to do that and have an audience in front of us now, and I think that's going to be more fulfilling for everybody."

I've seen Warren in just about every configuration- with the Mule, The Allmans, etc...but decided how I like him the very best...alone with his guitar!! The show was major awesome- and "Live At Bonnaroo" is sooooooooo worth every penney.
