'Bandstand' 50th Gala Grows
R&B stars Brandy and Babyface are among the latest performers confirmed for next month's "American Bandstand's 50th ... A Celebration!" special on ABC. Set to air May 3, the two-hour special will also feature '70s acts the Village People, KC & The Sunshine Band, and A Taste Of Honey, who join previously announced artists Michael Jackson, Cher, Alanis Morissette, KISS, and Stevie Wonder on the bill.
In addition, Little Richard will lead an all-star lineup through a rendition of "Good Golly, Miss Molly," a song he took to No. 10 on Billboard's pop singles chart in 1958. Joining Richard will be Fleetwood Mac founder/drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist Stanley Clarke, E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons, actor/occasional Blues Brothers member Jim Belushi on harmonica, Alabama guitarist/keyboardist Jeff Cook, Go-Go's guitarist Jane Wiedlin, former teen sensation Leif Garrett, actor/Spinal Tap member Michael McKean, Ray Parker Jr., Johnny Rivers, vocalist/guitarist Susanna Hoffs and guitarist Debi Peterson of the Bangles, percussionist Sheila E, organists James Ingram and Billy Preston, and the Chicago horn section (trumpeter Lee Loughnane, trombonist James Pankow, and saxophonist Walt Parazaider).
The show's musical director, Rickey Minor (Whitney Houston, Brandy, Lisa Stansfield), will also play guitar during the performance.
The "Bandstand" special will be taped over the course of three days in the coming weeks. Along with the live performances, the show will feature a host of interview and performance clips from the "Bandstand" archives, as well as confirmed appearances by Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Jennifer Lopez, and 'N Sync.
