A third volume of performances from the American Folk Blues Festival will hit stores Aug. 31 via Hip-O. "The American Folk Blues Festival 1962-1966, Volume 3" contains 18 previously unreleased live studio performances by such legends as Muddy Waters, Son House, Little Walter and Big Mama Thornton. It is paired with the second volume in an accompanying CD series, due the same day.
The performances were recorded live in a German TV studio during the festival's tours of Europe and were remastered by producer/engineer Eddie Kramer. Bonus DVD cuts include an instrumental by Earl Hooker and two tracks from Waters: "Long Distance Call" and "I Got My Mojo Working."
The accompanying CD boasts such highlights as Son House's "Death Letter Blues," Skip James' "All Night Long," Howlin' Wolf's "I'll Be Back Someday," Willie Dixon's "Nervous" and an all-star jam on "Bye Bye Blues."
Aug. 31 will also see the release of the DVD "Gunsmoke Blues," shot by crew members from the TV show "Gunsmoke" while they were on a production hiatus in November 1971. The crew traveled north from Los Angeles to the Pacific Northwest, capturing Waters, Thornton, Big Joe Turner and George "Harmonica" Smith on a barnstorming tour of the region.
Tracks include Waters' performances of "Mannish Boy" and "(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man," Turner's "Shake, Rattle and Roll," and a version of "So Long" by all four artists. The DVD sports two bonus audio tracks and a three-camera angle viewing option for Waters' "Walking Thru the Park."
