Gotta put in a good word for Dave Alvin's Ashgrove too. There's one country song and a couple of Americana "Blackjack" style songs...but the bulk is pure blues and he does an awesome job- especially the title track.

I heard Ashgrove's supposed to be abfab. Hint, hint. ;D The one I was disappointed in is Johnny Winter's. There's some terrific songs on it, but it's on the uneven side.

Since you mentioned Dave Alvin, and I've heard "Ashgrove" is very good too, has anyone gotten James Cotton's new CD "Baby Don't You Tear The Clothes"? I highly recommend this one. Even though he can't sing anymore, he's got an impressive list of guest vocalists on board. Dave Alvin does a song, there's Marcia Ball, Doc and Merle Watson, Jim Lauderdale and several other Blues and Americana perfomers.

None of the stores around here have it stocked so it looks I'll have to resort to the 'net for it.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I saw some of the 'countrier' guest artists...but like wow!! Doc & Merle go without saying, I love the cut with Dave & Chris Gaffney...but the one that totally blew me away was Jim Lauderdale!! Ok...he's done straight up country, he's done bluegrass and he's done the jam band thing...I've heard him do a blues cut before and he impressed me- but now I'd really love to hear him cut an all blues album. Two others I've recently gotten that get the thumbs up are Ruthie Foster's 'Stages' and WC Clark's 'Deep In The Heart'...

So you're a Doc and Merle fan too LS? Lauderdale I'd only heard of vaguely and yes, I agree he did a very good rendition. I don't have W.C.'s but Ruthie's fast becoming a favorite of mine.

Someday...I will get caught up ...but nobody go holdin' your breath or anything. Yeah- I love Doc (and of course Doc & Merle)...matter of fact I just saw Doc the other night. I've always wanted to go to Merlefest...I'd really like to go while Doc's still with us...maybe someday. That cut really has me curious though...it's all newly recorded material and the album credits DO say 'Doc & Merle'- but Merle can't possibly be on it. All the PR material says Doc with no mention of Merle...I know Doc & Merle had recorded the song- I'm wondering if they took the old Doc & Merle tracks and remixed the song so that Merle is indeed on it- and nobody's made note of it...or if it's a typo in the liner notes

I've been so busy trying to keep up on the politics board, that I keep running out of time to read this one! Now that you've brought it up, that's something I hadn't noted or realized myself! You've gotten me curious now too. I do have the Doc and Merle version of the song, so I'll have to listen to both versions to see if I can determine if it's a remix or an error.
