ROBERT JOHNSON: CAN'T YOU HEAR THE WIND HOWL? (Sony/Shout) (Due 7/22)
Every genre has their founding father or larger than life icon. Johnson didn't invent the blues. What he did was become the myth of what a bluesman was about. Consider this: with the running time of CDs these days and bonus tracks, b-sides etc, it's not hard for an artist to record twenty or so songs for an album. In his lifetime Johnson recorded only twenty-nine tracks. Enough to teach the world to sing the blues and influence every generation that followed him. This documentary covers it all, the man, the myth and all points in between. Essential.

DEEP BLUES: A MUSICAL PILGRIMAGE TO THE CROSSROADS (Sony/Shout) (Due 7/22)
If you're only going to own one documentary of the birth of the blues then quit shopping. You won't do better than this one. Director Robert Mugge along with writer Robert Palmer and musician Dave Stewart travel to the cradle of the blues, in the Mississippi delta, and come back with one of the most compelling documentaries ever. Performances by R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Bud Spires and many more are featured. Great interviews and musical footage. This one is a no-brainer for hard-core fans and newbies alike. At two hours and thirty-seven minutes they get pretty thorough.
