Waters Posts Anti-War Tracks Online Veteran rock artist Roger Waters is releasing a pair of new songs today (Sept. 7) via online download outlets. According to the former Pink Floyd leader, work on "To Kill the Child" and "Leaving Beirut" began "immediately after the invasion of Iraq. "It seems apposite to throw them out there on the Net, before the [U.S. presidential] election," the Cambridge, England-born artist says. "Historically, there have always been people within the artistic community who have spoken out about things they believe in and they should continue to do so. I shall certainly continue to do so, whether it has any effect or not, because I feel I have a responsibility to myself to do that." After naming a litany of corporations in one verse of "To Kill the Child," Waters sings, "Our standard of living, could this be a reason / That we would choose to kill the child." In the next verse, a list of religious texts and foods is followed by the refrain, "Is it dogma, doughnuts, ridicule faith / Fear of the dark, or shame or disgrace / That we would choose to kill the child." In the whispered verses of "Leaving Beirut," the song's narrator recounts the generosity of a desert stranger and his family. In the soaring choruses, Waters berates President Bush for spearheading a war, singing, "Oh George! Oh George! That Texas education must have f***ed you up when you were very small." Later in the song, U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair is the target: "Not in my name, Tony, you great war leader you / Terror is still terror, whosoever gets to frame the rules." Waters co-produced the new cuts with longtime compatriot Nick Griffiths, who also engineered the tracks. Joining him in the studio were guitarist Andy Fairweather-Low, drummer Graham Broad and vocalists Katie Kissoon, PP Arnold and Carol Kenyon. In addition to vocals, Waters contributes guitar, bass and keyboards to the songs. "To Kill The Child" and "Leaving Beirut" have been available for streaming on Waters' www.roger-waters.com , since Friday. Beginning today, they are on sale at through iTunes, SonyConnect, Napster, Walmart.com and other digital stores. It has been more than a decade since Waters' last solo album of original material, 1992's Columbia set "Amused To Death." In 2002, he contributed a demo of "Flickering Flame" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" to the internationally released compilation of his post-Floyd career, "Flickering Flame: The Solo Years, Vol. 1."

I really dig "Leaving Beirut". Has anybody else been creeped out by how close "The Wall" is getting to reality?

I really dig "Leaving Beirut". Has anybody else been creeped out by how close "The Wall" is getting to reality? Yeah I like that one best out of the two songs. And yep...we don't need no thought control...all in all it's just a-nother brick in the wall.

Lots of activity on the music front. Mellencamp, Tritt Unite Democratic rocker, Republican country singer harmonize for tolerance BEVERLY KEEL Sep 14, 2004 Democrat John Mellencamp and Republican Travis Tritt stood on a Nashville street corner Monday to make a bi-partisan plea for political civility. The rock star and country singer were filming the video for their current duet, "What Say You," from Tritt's CD My Honky Tonk History. The two star as street musicians standing in front of a fictional Ruby's Cafe, and the Chris Lenz-directed video will be interspersed with montages of Middle America. The video will be released in the coming weeks, and Mellencamp and Tritt plan to perform together on a number of television shows. "It's a very positive message," Mellencamp says of the single, penned by songwriters Frank Myers and Michael Bradford. "It's that we should be able to say what is on our minds and have an intelligent exchange of opinion -- whether you're left, right, middle or whatever -- without suffering repercussions. For some reason, in this country right now, that's not happening. If you don't believe one way, you are 'anti-American,' you're 'not supporting the troops.' I just think it's wrong." The song, based on a phrase used by conservative talk show host Bill O'Reilly, features the lyrics, "I don't have all the answers/But I share my point of view/What say you?" Tritt, who recently played an event during the Republican National Convention, had several reasons for working with Mellencamp, a participant in the anti-Bush Vote for Change tour. "I've admired his music for so many years," Tritt says. "I also admire his integrity. Very much like me, he has resisted all outside pressures to change his music or let anybody tell him what his music should be. And the fact that I thought our voices would work well together even though we have different political viewpoints really illustrates what this song is about."

Vote For Change Finale Set For D.C. Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
The star-studded finale of the Vote for Change tour has been nailed down for Oct. 11 at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., after plans to hold it in Miami fell through. Thirteen acts from the trek will be on hand, including Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Dave Matthews Band, John Mellencamp and the Dixie Chicks.
The four-hour bill will be rounded out by Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, John Fogerty, Jurassic 5, Keb' Mo' and Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. Tickets go on sale Saturday (Sept. 18) via Ticketmaster.
"We all wanted to come back together for a finale show after we had finished our separate tour dates," says Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard. "We thought our nation's capitol seemed like the most ideal place to do that."
"This finale concert will clearly be a historic event, and we're honored and grateful to be presenting it with so many world-renowned artists," says Eli Pariser of MoveOn PAC, which is sponsoring the trek. "After four years of deficits, layoffs, and war, this call for new leadership will signal to millions of Americans that on Nov. 2, they need to get out and vote for change."
The Vote for Change tour kicks off Oct. 1 in Pennsylvania and will visit 36 cities in 12 presidential election swing states.

'Fahrenheit' CD To Benefit Rock The Vote Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y.
R.E.M., Neil Young and the Go-Go's are among the acts whose songs are featured on the soundtrack to director Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11." Rhino will issue the set Oct. 5, the same day the film is released on DVD by Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. A portion of the proceeds from CD sales will benefit non-profit, non-partisan voter registration organization Rock the Vote.
A polarizing and highly critical view of U.S. President George W. Bush's fight against terrorism, "Fahrenheit 9/11" has become the most successful documentary in history. The Lion's Gate Films-distributed release has grossed more than $118 million in U.S. box office receipts.
A wide range of music graces the soundtrack, from classic songs such as J.J. Cale's "Cocaine" and Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" to the "Theme From the Greatest American Hero (Believe It or Not)." Other contributions come from Eric Burdon, Bloodhound Gang and Jethro Tull.
Six of the 16 cuts on the "Fahrenheit" disc are score pieces by Jeff Gibbs, who is also listed as a co-producer of the film.
"Scoring this movie was like hitting a moving target because the story was constantly evolving," says Gibbs, who also scored Moore's Academy Award-winning film "Bowling for Columbine." "I would finish music for a scene and think that I was done, and then Michael would re-edit it and I would start over again.
"I was part of the movie while it was being filmed, which helped me immensely when it came time to create the score because I knew what Michael was trying to get across in each scene," he adds. "I think it would have been almost impossible to do this job without that experience."
Lion's Gate is planning to re-release "Fahrenheit 9/11" Sept. 24 in U.S. theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The DVD is expected to boast a featurette on the reaction to the movie's theatrical release, deleted scenes and the 9/11 Commission testimony of national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.
Here is the "Fahrenheit 9/11" soundtrack list: "The Un-President," Jeff Gibbs "Vacation," the Go-Go's "Bush Waits...And Waits," Jeff Gibbs "Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten, for String Orchestra & Bell," Paavo Jarvi/Estonian National Symphony Orchestra "We Gotta Get Out of This Place," Eric Burdon "Weapons of Deceit," Jeff Gibbs "Deserter," Jeff Gibbs "Cocaine," J.J. Cale "Shiny Happy People," R.E.M. "Magnificent Seven Theme," Elmer Bernstein "Afghan Victory Dance," Jeff Gibbs "Fire Water Burn," Bloodhound Gang "Theme From the Greatest American Hero (Believe It or Not)," Joey Scarbury "Aqualung," Jethro Tull "All They Ask," Jeff Gibbs "Rockin' in the Free World," Neil Young

Moore Compiles Music That Inspired 'Fahrenheit' Barry A. Jeckell, N.Y. On the same day Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" is released on DVD and its soundtrack issued on CD, Sony BMG Music's Epic Soundtrax will release a compilation of songs the documentary director says triggered his muse. Due Oct. 5, "Songs and Artists That Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11" boasts cuts by Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, System Of A Down, Pearl Jam and the Clash, among others. "When I make a film, I take my portable CD case and place in it a series of albums which contain music that reflects the mood I am in and the reasons that are motivating me to make this film," Moore explains. "The songs on this CD are either the actual songs that made up our 'on-the-scene' soundtrack, or they are by artists whom I have listened to over the years and have given me much inspiration." In addition to a dozen anthems, most of which are well known, are two new songs, including the first music from former Rage Against The Machine singer Zack De la Rocha in five years. Produced by Trent Reznor, De la Rocha's "We Want It All" is the first single from the compilation. "Seeing 'Fahrenheit 9/11' was like hearing Dylan's 'Masters of War' or Public Enemy's 'Bring the Noise' for the first time," De la Rocha says. "It wasn't just about melody, great production or hard rhymes -- it was the weight of the argument and what the piece forced me to consider." Coincidentally, the set's other new track comes from De la Rocha's former Rage bandmate, Tom Morello. Now a member of Audioslave, the guitarist appears here as the Nightwatchman, the name given to his acoustic singer/songwriter solo project. Moore describes Morello's "No One Left" as "both beautiful and haunting -- and painfully true. Death in New York, death in Baghdad, it is all to be mourned. Tom sings, the guitar is acoustic, and I am compelled to play this song over and over." The compilation opens with "I Am a Patriot (And the River Opens for the Righteous)," a Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul song that was frequently performed by Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder during appearances supporting Ralph Nader's 2000 Green Party Presidential bid. Dylan contributes "With God on Our Side," while Springsteen offers a live version of "Chimes of Freedom" and Pearl Jam chip in with a concert cover of "Masters of War." Moore says he found strength in the plight of the Dixie Chicks, who became pariahs in the country music community after disavowing a Texas connection to President Bush during a London concert. "Their courage -- and the abuse and censorship that they had to sustain and overcome -- did much to get me through this past year," he says. The compilation features the Chicks' Vietnam War tale "Travelin' Soldier," a No. 1 title on Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in March 2003. Sony BMG Music plans to donate half the net profits from U.S. sales of the disc to the Fallen Patriot Fund. Selected by Moore, the charity was established to help families of U.S. military personnel who have been killed or seriously injured in the current Iraqi conflict. Here is the full "Songs and Artists That Inspired Fahrenheit 9/11" track list: "I Am a Patriot (And the River Opens for the Righteous)," Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul "Chimes of Freedom" (live)," Bruce Springsteen "With God on Our Side," Bob Dylan "We Want It All," Zack De la Rocha "Boom!" System Of A Down "No One Left," the Nightwatchman "Masters of War" (live), Pearl Jam "Travelin' Soldier," Dixie Chicks "Fortunate Son" (live), John Fogerty "Know Your Rights," the Clash "The Revolution Starts Now," Steve Earle "Where Is the Love?," Black Eyed Peas featuring Justin Timberlake "Good Night, New York" (live)," Nanci Griffith "Hallelujah," Jeff Buckley

OK, I did my job. How bout everyone else? I did and it felt great! Then I drove down to take my parents to do theirs. Now I'm keeping my fingers crossed, partly to keep from biting my nails to the quicks ;D but most of all so that when this is finally over, we awake to brighter days ahead.

OK, I did my job. How bout everyone else? No retreat baby, no surrender. I was the first one in line at 6am ;D and then it was boots on the ground time! The stakes are too high this time and registered voters don't add up to diddleysh-t if they don't get to the polls to vote. So I threw in with a bunch of other likeminded people who felt they needed to do something more than vote and I spent the day hauling older folks, the disabled and anybody else who needed a way to get to the polls and back home. The polls have been closed here for a couple hours and we've done all we can. The waiting's the hard part. Since I'm ready to go nuts already and there's still a ways to go, I'm heading down to the local watering hole to wait it out. May the force be with us and I end up getting sh-tfaced in celebration and not misery.
