Los Lonely Boys live at the Filmore once again another great disc to get. It gives you a real chance to hear what they sound like live.Yep it's a good one...The instrumentals on Cisco Kid are totally incendiary Good cover of La Bamba too- though aside from the killer guitar licks- surprisingly a little on the tame side I thought (no one's ever beaten the Valens original...but Los Lobos did come damn close). And great accapella version of More Than Love. The Live In Austin DVD is really good too but...
Neither really captures what they're like live (which is AWESOME). Both are mostly live (but great) versions of most of the stuff off their latest album...and both had some studio 'tweaking.' Their real live shows are different (as in much longer)- they do way more than what's on the album- especially more Texas blues.
If you want one that really captures what they sound like live- there's an 'official' bootleg out there called Live At The Blue Cat Blues. I ran into it a while back on Ebay while I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a rare copy of their first indie studio album (their latest studio album is actually their second studio release). This one was recorded live back in '00 at a club in Dallas and it's straight off the soundboards (just the 3 of 'em- no Reese on keyboards)- which proves these guys are the real deal and no 'studio creation.'
The first 3 songs are the set they did during a SRV birthday bash...the rest of the album is from a second show they were asked back to do after they blew everyone away at the first show.
The first song they did at the SRV show was Scuttle Buttin'...and they totally nailed every single note and that big 'fat' SRV sound. In the second show they do Pride & Joy...and you'd swear Henry did the vocals- backed by SRV & DT themselves!! They do a few songs that are on their latest studio release (Heaven, Dime Mi Amour, Senorita) but they were newly written- they hadn't been recorded yet and they were 'test driving' them...they have a little harder edge to 'em. It also has another version of The Man To Beat (sans Reese/keyboard) which I like better than the Fillmore version (even as great as that one is). But as much as the studio release has more of a 'Santana' influence- this one's way more 'SRV' style blues...Matter of fact Henry wrote the totally killer Cotton Fields and Cross Roads (11 minutes of pure heaven)- a slow Texas Blues (think Texas Flood) and if Stevie were still here- he woulda snapped that one up for himself!!
Personally IMO, JoJo & Ringo are one formidable rhythm section- and I'd love to see a matchup between them and Chris & Tommy...My guess is it'd be a draw- or dang close to one. Henry is too dang impressive...there's plenty of guys who can manage to be 'SRV' sound-a-likes- but something's always 'missing.' Henry- he's definitely got Stevie's soul in his fingers.
Anyway...after I'd gotten the CD, on it there's info...there's actually a website you can buy it from www.bluecatblues.net It's not cheap- it'll set you back about $20...but it's a long CD (16 songs) and worth every penny. The guy I bought it from still shows up on Ebay from time to time selling a few copies for a few bucks cheaper too...
